A Simple Guide to a Happy Maxforums life…

-Jump to FAQ section-

Don’t discuss warez.

Warez are any form of pirated/cracked software. Discussion of these and anything to do with these is not acceptable and this topic almost always leads to a fight and has no place here.

This isn't eBay. Don't sign-up to sell your crap.

This is a learning resource not a public auction house. Please don't create an account just to offload your unwanted goods. We will not tolerate this and your post will be deleted. Repeat offenses will result in an account suspension.

Be truthful about your work.

Basically if you are posting up work that is entirely or partially not yours, tell us. There are very many members here and if the images have been posted somewhere else, you will almost certainly be found out. And anyway what are you really going to gain by lying?

Also when you register here, please fill out the personal information accurately. Do not assume anonymity on this forum. You will receive zero respect and zero assistance from us if you are trying to hide something. And believe me, we check.

Don’t post crap.

Please understand this is not a chat room it is basically a resource to post your questions and answers to problems you may be having with your programs, with some extras thrown in :)

Do not create a thread to test your signature, test your html, or test posting a picture. If you need to know how to do these things check the FAQ section below.
If you still need to test something use a thread that was already created a while ago such as this...
SIG TEST THREAD
...and then you won't be filling up the forums with temporary posts.

Posting junk mail, blatant advertising, get rich schemes, chain letters and gimmicks are not acceptable here. Period.

Posting requests for specific objects will nearly always end in disappointment as the chances are there won't be a tutorial design just for the model you want to make. Instead ask us how to help with a particular aspect of the model you are working on.

Keep to one thread.

If you have started a thread about, say, chamfering problems when making your model plane, and then you have a question about texturing the same plane, just ask the question as a reply to the original thread you made. Creating a new one will only cause other member’s threads to be pushed down the page for no reason, resulting in them possibly not getting as good a response as possible.

Show off your work, sure!...but…

Only post your best work. Remember we are your audience so post work that is worthy of an audience. Works in progress are fine but make sure there is a substantial amount of effort into it before you ask for critique.

If you do post work, expect critique. This is not a gallery site, a lot of people here are very experienced and very helpful, and any input can help to improve anyone’s images.

Search the Help Files first.

If you have a question make sure that you are not just being lazy by getting someone else to find the answer because you can't be bothered. Check the user manuals for the software you are using, search the help files, search the internet tutorials, THEN ask your question, you will get far more respect for at least trying to find out yourself.

If you dont have the help files on your system you can download them from the autodesk website at the following address:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=9861583&linkID=5604642

Describe your problem clearly and accurately.

When posing a question please describe the problem in as clear English language as possible.
We understand that many members may not have English as their first language so no-one will complain as long as we know.

Starting a new thread or posting a reply is not the same as doing a text on your mobile phone so please try not to abbreviate your words in the same fashion. There are no limitations to the length or your post so please take the time to type it out correctly.

The more details you can provide us in asking questions will result in a much more accurate answer. Things like providing the version of Max you are using and the things you have already tried to remedy it with, can reduce the amount of time wasted for you and the person replying if you cancel these things out in the first message.

There are many instances of people asking very general questions about things like ”I want to model a plane, how would you go about this?” Please understand that there are far too many things to know about something like this and you will almost certainly be replied to with either sarcastic comments or recommendations to do some tutorials on basic modelling techniques.

As a matter of courtesy, title your thread logically describing the content in a few words. Don’t label it ‘Please Help’ or ‘Look Here!” it doesn’t take long and will get you better replies.

Be Nice.

Treat others with the same respect you would hope to have shown to you.

Ask politely and you will get a polite answer.

Don’t expect an answer from people, if someone knows an answer they will reply, the page count in the thread you created may not be and accurate measure of how many people actually see the page, page refreshes count too sometimes. If someone doesn’t reply to your question, they either don't know the answer or just don’t feel like replying. Leave it at that. Provoking people onto answering is most definitely not the way to go around here and will result in resentment.

If you do get an answer please, please reply and say thank you and whether it worked for you or not. People post replies on the goodness of their own heart and it nice to know that their response helped someone.

Have fun!

After all, this is a just a forum, there is no reason to give yourself a headache over the events that transpire here. We're just a bunch of people who share the same interest so enjoy the fact that you are able to know these people and learn a little something.

Don't be too harsh on people and try and take it in your stride. There is nothing that will occur here that will threaten your life as you know it, it won't affect your food supply, it won't pay your rent, it won't cause you to die of a heart attack (unless you let it).

Maxforums.org is just entertainment and knowledge rolled up into one big avocado green line and snorted through a straw like cocaine! Well not really but for some of us it can be just as addictive so sit back and enjoy the ride.

1. How do I post an image on maxforums?

First of all you need to have a hosting website, if you have your own web space and it allows direct linking then you can use that, all you need to do is type out the URL address of the image such as http://www.maxforums.org/images/picture.jpg and it will appear.

If you do not own any web space you should make an account at Photobucket.com this is an image and video hosting website for this specific job. After registering, upload you images then use the 'Direct Link' they give you (the one starting 'http://') then paste it in your post/reply.

2. How large an image can I post here?

Embedded Images:

Maximum Dimensions: 800px x 600px

These limits are in place for two main reasons:

1. Simply for courtesy towards members on dial-up internet and also members with a monthly download limit.

2. To keep the forum layout intact, very wide images stretch the forum beyond the viewable area of most monitor resolutions and navigation is more difficult for the viewer.

Should you feel the need to post a larger image, please have the courtesy of posting either a text link or a thumbnail image link, photobucket.com (mentioned above) gives automatic code for this so you dont need to go to any extra effort. And also just mentioning how big the picture will be once viewed is a nice touch for people willnig to help you out.

Here are a couple of ways to post a linked picture on maxforums,
You should type these out in place of just your image URL

- Text Link:

<a href="http://maxforums.org/grotey/large_image.jpg">CLICK HERE FOR IMAGE</a>

...this produces the following

- Thumbnail Image Link:

<a href="http://maxforums.org/grotey/large_image.jpg"><img src="http://maxforums.org/grotey/thumb_image.jpg"></a>

...this produces the following

3. How do I change my password?

If you are already logged in, you will need to log out first. Then go to the login page and click on the ‘forgot my password’ link, this will ask you to enter the email address you used to register with maxforums. After entering the address, maxforums will email you a new temporary password for you to log in with and you will then be prompted to make a new one once logged in again.

If you have forgotten or no longer have access to that email address, then Im afraid you will need to make a new maxforums account.

4. How do I change my username?

The short answer is simply that you can't. Once it's in, it's in. You must make sure in the registering procedure that your username is correct and is what you will want to live with for the duration of your stay.

-Back to Questions-

5. How do I change the Date of Birth in my profile?

As with question 4, the short answer is simply that you can't. Once it's in, it's in. You must make sure in the registering procedure that you get it right.

6. How do I make a signature/avatar image?

Once logged in, click on the ‘User Preferences’ button at the top of the forum. Here you are faced with a large box to type in your signature message or image. This is however the only place you will need to enter html image tags around your image. An example of how to do this is below in two different forms.

- An image on its own

<img src="image URL address" border="0">

- An image with hyperlink to external website

<a href=http://www.maxforums.org><img src="image URL address" border="0"></a>

The http:// part of the link address is very important as it will link to a sub page of maxforums otherwise, the same goes for the website address in your profile.

To center the content of your sig/avatar simply type these two html tags either side of the start and end of the content you want centered... <center> and </center>

If you need to test your signature/avatar use a the following thread..
SIG TEST THREAD

7. What is the code for maxforums green?

The light green colour that holds the body of the posts and replies on the forums and is the colour you should use as the backghround of your sig images is as follows...

Hex Code:

#B9BFA3

RGB Value:

R 185
G 191
B 163

-Back to Questions-

8. How big can my sig/avatar be?

Image Sig/Avatar: No larger than 500px(w) x 150px (h) and 80kb in file size. Any standard image format is allowed as long as it conforms to these limits.

Text Sig: No more than 5 lines of text.

Text and Image: Adjust these two limits accordingly, i.e. don't have full size image and five lines of text as this is just unnecessary and annoying to have to scroll past.

The limits are there for quite obvious reasons so we would ask you not to abuse them.

12. My Move, Rotate and Scale gizmos have disappeared, how do I get them back?

The most common reason for this happening is that you have accidentally press ‘X’ key on your keyboard, press it again and they should re-appear.

-Back to Questions-

13. When I pan, my objects turn into a simple box/lines until I let go of the mouse button. How do I fix it?

The most common reason for this happening is that you have accidentally press the letter ‘O’ on your keyboard, press it again and it should resolve the matter. This function is called adaptive degradation and is designed to save viewport speed for high poly scenes.

14. What is a clay render and how do I make one?

A clay render is one that uses global illumination instead of direct illumination. It produces a flat non-glossy look to your image that enables people to see any mesh errors you may have in your model. This is a good thing in case you are wondering, as it will allow people to point out things to improve upon in case you have missed them. It also looks pretty cool :)

To produce a clay render, do the following:

  • Save the scene to new file
  • Delete any lights in your scene
  • Create a plane object (create panel-->objects-->plane) and place it beneath your objects. This is pretty important for nice clay renders. Placing it directly beneath also produces the best results.
  • Add a skylight (create panel-->lights-->skylight)

  • Turn on ‘light tracer’ (rendering menu-->advanced lighting-->light tracer)
  • The important value here is the rays/sample value. The default is 250. This value is good for a decent quality clay render but you don’t really need it so high to start off with. I find a value of 125 is generally good enough for work-in-progress (WIP) images, and value of 64 will produce a pretty quick render although the shadows will probably come out quite blotchy.

  • Open the material editor (press ‘M’ on your keyboard)
  • Select a new grey sphere and click the grey colour next to the word ‘diffuse’ and choose either pure white or just off white for a hint of colour.
  • Assign this material to everything in your scene
  • Hit the F9 key to render
  • Done. Now save the file and show off your work!

15. What's the best tutorial out there for a beginner to learn modelling in 3DS Max?

The Joan of Arc tutorial is without doubt the best most famous tutorial out there for beginners. It guides you through a vast range of techniques and if you follow it through you will have produced a compete character at the end. Here's the link: Joan of Arc Tutorial

16. Which is better, 3DS Max or Maya?

This is one of the most common questions here on maxforums and it always results in the same answer, that being, there is no answer, its all to do with your own preference. Its not a matter of 'this one is better than that one', its a matter of 'they both have pros and cons of their own'. Here is a previous thread that has the same question asked:

3DS Max vs Maya Thread

Please dont start a new thread on this as you wont receive any differing comments.

17. Why you should NOT render to a movie file format!

OK, it's not technically a question as such, but this comes up quite regularly on Maxforums so heres the answer.

You should not ever (if you can help it) render out to a movie format i.e. .mov, .avi .etc because if Max crashes (which it seems to like doing at the worst possible moment) then you will need to start all over again rendering from the very first frame in the sequence.

Rendering to a still image format i.e. .png, .tga, .jpg .etc means that each and every frame will be saved as they get rendered and then if max crashes, you will only need to carry on from the last frame it got to.

You will of course need some form of movie editing software to compile all the frames together like Adobe Premiere, After Effects or numerous free applications out there such as Virtualdub.

If you dont want to use an external program to compile your separate frames, you can do it three different ways within max itself. These are listed below in order of best...ness:

Video Post Method

This is the most preferable 'in-house' compiling method as once you have set it up it will save with the max file it applies to so redoing if you redo the frames is not needed.
Method:

- First of all make sure all your frames are in their own folder and named sequentially i.e. frame01.jpg, frame02.jpg, frame03.jpg .etc

- Then go to the 'Rendering' menu and choose 'Video Post'
- Next, click the 'Add Image Input Event' button , then select the first frame from the previous location, then whilst the frame is selected make sure you tick the 'sequence' box in the same window.

- Click 'Ok'
- Next, click the 'Add Image Output Event' button , then click the 'Files...' button to choose the file name and format of the eventual movie file.

- Click 'Save', then click 'Ok'

- Now you all you have to do is click the 'Execute Sequence' button , at this point make sure the frame range and image sizes are correct.

- Click 'Render'

Background sequence method

Alternatively, a cheap and cheerful way to do it is to open a new empty scene, press '8' to open the environment settings window, click the background button and add the first frame as before, making sure once again that 'sequence' is checked.
Then all you have to do is render the empty scene as a movie format and you will get the video. The reason that you do use a video format here is because all the frames are already saved and a crash here wouldnt affect anything.

RAM Player method

You can use the RAM player in the 'Rendering' menu.
You open the player, click the open button next to 'Channel A' then select the first image in the folder containing your saved frames, make sure 'sequence' is checked and it loads them in numerical order. It is then ready to save.

18. The flag in my profile is the wrong one, how do I change it?

The flag in your profile is automatically determined by your computer's IP address. If it's a UK IP address you will get a UK flag in your profile.

Unfortunately the system gets it wrong from time to time and if you happen to be one of those members, then im afraid there isn't anything you can do, except maybe move to that country to match it :o)

-Back to Questions-

19. What coding can I use in my signature?

Maxforums is quite open to what you have in your sig, you can use pretty much any html coding, and custom css (within reason)

We don't mind what you have in your sig as long as its not inflamatory, doesn't mess with the forum layout, and stays within the confines of the sig area/size limits.

Although we are pretty open to custom sigs, javascript is not allowed on the forum, period.

-Back to Questions-

20. How do I improve the texture quality in the viewport?

Well first off, the texture quality is purposely reduced in the viewports to increase the viewport speed.

But heres a tip on getting the best you can get:

Customise menu-->Preferences-->Viewports tab-->Configure driver

Then click the largest texture size button on both rows of buttons, plus tick the 'Match Bitmap Size as Closely as Possible' box.

Then restart Max.

21. What on earth is a fronat?

Don't ask....just....don't ask.

If you simply have to know then click on the link below but be prepared for the worst!

You have been warned...dun dun dunnnnnn!!!

-Back to Questions-

22. SHOULD I POST USING CAPS LOCK?

No!
It's feckin' annoying, dont do it!

-Back to Questions-

23. Why doesn't the web address in my profile work properly?

It's most likely to be because you have not included http:// before the address.
Not including that makes the address go to a sub-address within the maxfourms.org domain.

-Back to Questions-

24. The new 'Select by Name' box sucks, can I get the old one back?

Sure you can! All you need to do is find and alter a file called CurrentDefaults.ini, but depending on the version of windows you have depends on the location you will find the file.

For Windows XP users the file is located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\3dsmax\2008 - 64bit\enu\defaults\MAX\

For Windows Vista users the file is located in one of these two locations:

either...

c:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsmax\2009 - 32bit\enu\defaults\MAX\

or

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2009\Defaults\MAX\FactoryDefaults\

After finding the file, open it in notepad and find this entry and change its value to 0 instead of 1:

[Scene Explorer]

SelectByNameUsesSceneExplorer=1

25. How do I make a wireframe render?

There are many ways to do this, click the link below to show you a few of those ways.

10 Ways to make a Wireframe Image

I personally use methods 5 and 6 depending on the situation.

26. One of my Max Windows is off-screen, how do I get it back?

This is a quite common problem after switching back from a dual-screen setup to a single screen setup where some windows were on the second screen.

There are a couple of methods to resolving this, and there are as follows (using the Material Editor as an example):

Method 1.

Make sure the Material Editor is open
Right click an empty area of the windows task bar at the bottom of your screen and choose 'cascade windows'.
This should put all the windows back in one monitor.

or

Method 2.

Make sure the Material Editor is the active window by closing it then opening it again.
Then hit Alt
Then hit the 'left' arrow cursor key on your keyboard
Then the 'down' arrow key to move down to 'Move' (and choose it with the enter key)
Then use the cursor keys once more to move the render window over to the correct monitor.

27. I'm making an MMORPG, who wants to help me?

I'm guessing that it pays nothing now, but will look great on our CV's and give us valuable exposure?

Unless you are paying, you are not going to get anything here. I guarantee that.

Have you got a website so you can show use what you have so far, or are you a teenager living in his parents house, with big ambitions?

No offence, just trying to work out where you are with the project.

What's your hourly rate?
