3ds Max 2017 MassFx Fracture

I'm trying to create a space scene where I have a big asteroid that gets hit by another asteroid and the collision breaks the asteroids into pieces...

The way I'm going about this, is that I've fractured my asteroids, and then in MassFX, applied the MassFX modifier to all of the pieces in the animation. Ive also created a Gravity Spacewarp, so that once the bits of the asteroid are blown off, that they drift back to the center...

My problem is, that when I simulate my animation, the gravity space warp "crushes" or disassembles my Asteroid before any collisions take place...

How can I get it so that the Asteroid fragments stick together, despite the gravity space warp, and that they only break off after enough force has been applied to them?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can you animate the force of the space warp so it has no effect until you want it to?

Probably but then it would stll affect the entire Fractured Object rather than just the pieces that fell off...

Have a look for "Start in Sleep Mode" and Sleep settings.

Make asteroid 1 sleepy and let asteroid 2 wake it up.

Are you aware of a plugin called Rayfire ?


This guy does it with columns, effect is at 5.51

So, I think my main problem now is, understanding how MassFX handles my models....
Is there a polycount I should keep in mind when fracturing a model?
What about any polycount I should be aware of when usng MassFX?
Is there also a limit in the number of objects MassFX can handle in realtime?
Say I wanted over 400 Fractured Pieces, would that be possible? Can they be high poly?
What advice if any can I get in keeping the performance of MassFX at reasonable levels?

I haven't a clue, I don't use MassFX for fracturing I prefer to use Rayfire, I find MassFX dated, limited & clumsy to use.
