Actually....(faster AO)

Turns out, if you're willing to do a little fiddling with bright/dark values of the rendered AO pass by some means, you can use a white material on your objects, and get pretty decent results in about 1/4th the time. Samples will be forthcoming.

Turns out, the quiciksilver renderer has an AO setting, and you can make it run as short or long as you want, time-wise. Here's a few comparisons....

MR AO render, with white skylight

QUICKSILVER AO render with white skylight (before adjustment)

...and the same render AFTER adjusting levels...(not needed really, since you could actually adjust the AO settings in the quicksilver options to be darker, fuller, etc.)

Just did a pretty big render...200 frames of quicksilver AO, 151 objects (my Terminator hydraulic pump disassembling), 640x480, and it took 37.5 minutes total. Will post a Youtube link in a while...

Try an AO pass with really low settings and just blur it a bit in post.

@ FX,
Quicksilver gives equal results to a 3 to 30 minute MR AO render, but delivers the final in around 9-20 seconds. I'll stick with that for sure.
