Blender 2.78 released

Blender 2.78 has been released.

After months of work and a few weeks of testing, the Blender foundation has released the latest version. Many new features have been added, and new additions to the Cycles renderer are very welcome. While not a complete replacement for Max, it does have many features that Max lacks.

If you've never used Blender, give it a go some time. Once you get round the interface and the node-based materials, you will find it a very capable piece of software.

I'm just a hobbyist these days, so having something like this for free with many add-ons and great community support is fantastic. Feel free to ask any beginner questions, if you do give it a go. At first the interface is awful, coming from Max, but once you get used to it, it is much friendlier than Max in many ways.

Can you recommend any "modern" learning materials for it? It's changed so much that I've noticed a lot of the tutorials are for super old versions, maybe they're still applicable though? I wouldn't know.

I love blender, I moved off of max a while back.
Still hate the UV editing in it.

If your like me I tell blender's interface to act like Maya or Max, so some times I have to swap between them and blender because of some hotkeys

Sanger, there's the Mesh Deform modifier which does similar.

Dave, what level are you at right now with Blender. Absolute novice, familiar, etc?

I've had to do a Max(vray) to Blender(cycles) plugin recently ( well not a plugin it's actually called an 'Addon' in Blender ) , or at least the basic foundations of one, so have actually spent some time with the overall UI and workflow. There's still a few things with that interface that remapping shortcuts will just never fix, but damn, those guys are pretty much sitting on the bleeding edge with the tech they put into Blender..

Also there are so many kids now picking up Blender in order to do game-related stuff etc, learning it via Youtube etc, it's surely just going to get bigger.

There's zero doubt that it's fully capable, and cycles produces some great results. As always it's back to the damn interface. Why didn't they just make it a standard windowed thing based on the operating system, with standard functionality like any other app? I read something about the UI being run off GPU code so that it's super-fast ( which it is ) and looks the same on all platforms. But to me, that's too much of a trade-off. The problem comes when trying to transfer skills from other 3d applications to and from Blender. It's just so different. There's going to be a generation of young people that think the quirky odd Blender workflow is 'how 3d is done'. There's something to be said for having a user interface that conforms to peoples expectations, that isn't too 'different' - that's why so many of our commercial websites eg in the uk Tesco, Asda, Currys, Argos, etc etc etc all follow a very very similar format, so that people can immediately and quite easily navigate and use those websites even if it's their first visit.

Anyway, i'm going on a bit now. It's an old topic that won't go away, but still annoying. I just wish they'd make it normal :)

+1 for normal.

I shop at Tesco, I'm used to the layout, I'm in and out in 10 mins I know where everything is...that's Max that is.

Blender is like when Tesco decide to rearrange the whole damn layout only the bread is in the tampon section, the milk is in the deep freeze and the beer is next to the cereals.

Blender UI is crisp sharp and responsive and has some awesome features but it's too much work damn to get to them, I use Max every day I just don't have the time.

...I am au fait with Zbrush now tho', I used to hate that with a passion too :/

nodes don't appeal as always.

Yes they are call mean crease, you set edging to act like the borders of smooth groups

You can set the hot keys and interface handling to max or maya.
