Corona
show user profile  STRAT
Hi guys

Interested in your opinions on Corona renderer. I've been testing it a short while.
Bloody amazing to be honest. Lacks the degree in rocket science vray requires and delivers superb output which, using it's awesome light mixing power, is soooooooooo much more flexible than vray. Seriously considering it for pro work at the moment.

(Its also still free at the moment with zero restrictions)

Anyone else tried it and have opinions?

I used it all through the alpha stage. I really liked it.

i liked it a lot but my concern was the lack of support material for it. For example, there are a lot of materials that i needed and i spent hours trying to find how to make them and nothing. I also found the lack of tutorials a hinderance. If i don't know how to do some things, i will look for tutorials on youtube or in google. I had problem finding a lot of them. that was my only complaint.

Yes, this is also a problem with alpha stage stuff of course - not yet up to full supportedness. Mind you, i find the dedictated forum pretty decent.

Luckily being a C4D user, the implimentation is like vray - bloody good. Better than Max (for both) in my opinion (we use it in work).
Another trick I'm finding is to find myself a material i want in vray format, then just hit material convert. It does a great job of this, almost 90% dedicated.

What i love about corona is it's almost a 1 button solution. Takes ALL the technical shit out of it. Vray requires an iq higher than stephen hawkins to make it work, corona is the stark opposite, although does have a more technical side if you fancy. But not much.

The materials issue was something I brought up with the developers a few times. I was told they were happy with the materials as they were, which is disappointing.

It is an amazing render engine though. The only one I was able to render a scene with trillions of polygons with.

Most interesting James :)

I too am seriously considering dropping future vrays for my team. Infact, i find vray 3.4 reletivly shit. Very VERY dissapointing.

Nic - luckily for me i'm a simpleton :P. I never use more than 2 diffuse channels in my materials. Super pure and simple. Gets the job done. You dont need to faff about with material trees containing 1000's of computations. All crap ;)

I really enjoyed using it back when it was free.
Didn't know it had become free again? What happened?

I just tried it after being reluctant for a while, have to say it's pretty amazing. Speed to me seems the same as in vray (progressive rendering might persuade anyone into thinking it's doing things much faster even when it's not) but the setup time is very quick.
I still don't know if I'd use it instead of vray though.
Cheers!
