Create a Path from Object Motion?

Hello everyone!

I have been revisiting an old animation I created and I have a need to try and change it which has presented an interesting challenge that I have no idea if it is possible to achieve in Max?
Here is a small render of my original animation. As you can see it is pretty simple – think of it as a stick on the end of a rotating tube. As the tube rotates it also traverse so the end point of the stick describes a helix motion.

Now when I originally created this animation I based it on the method of the writing pen tutorial with a path constraint and a spline with a path deform that grows along the path to fill out the colour of the resultant visible path. i.e. I created the helix first as the path.

What I want to do now is basically the opposite – i.e. is it possible to create the helix path based on the position of the end point of the stick?

Basically I want to see what different shapes of path will generated by changing the angle of the stick. For example when the stick is at 90 degrees then a regular helix is described. However I would like automatically generate the parabola that would be described by say having the stick at a 45 degree angle for example.

Is this possible to do in Max?

If anyone has any ideas to help out I would really appreciate some help with this challenge?

Oh.... I think I have just discovered Trajectories... could be the solution...?

You should be able to create spline shapes from the trail mesh.

Quicker way and free....

Set up a pflow source with a single particle locked to the emitter and aligned to the source pivot, link the pflow source to your object and animate, then run this script:
