I am looking for software for cloning hard drives. I want to be able to make backups in case of a system crash. I am looking for a stand alone option, not necessarily a free one. Just need to be a single option that does everything.

i use the Backup & Recovery 2010 Free Edition. easy as pie, as you would say.
no problems so far, rather saves my ass twice meanwhile. thats why i´m posted this

Great thread, I had, and still have, mu old hard drive that died on me, is there any device I can buy to retrieve the files off there even though its dead?
I would take it to the shop but the last bloke that toughed my computer messed it up altogether.

can you connect it to a usb hard drive cradle? try that and see if you can get to be recognized. if not, you might be sol unless you want to send it out for recovery. then they remove the platters and put them into another drive to retrieve your data

depends on what the hdd died of. large majority of the time its just a bad sector in an unfortunate place and the drive isnt dead, just disabled by the software to stop it from further corrupting data/spewing out crap. Most of the time you can just plug such drive into a computer that boots from somewhere else and get most if not all data off it by just copying, if the drive isnt recognized you can try a: cooling it but not enough to cause condensation (not sure whats the exact reasoning behind this but it has proven to temporarily make many drives accessible again) b: switching the drives interface mode to ide which will slow the drive down sometimes enough to make it work c: switching the drive to lower performance mode (most hdd manufacturers provide dos programs that do this). If it still doesn't show you can try and remagnetize the platter with some software (forgot what they call these), last ditch effort there since this is guaranteed to corrupt some of your data while at the same time guarantees that you get the rest of it off the drive. On the off chance that the hdd heads are broken (very low chance of this ever happening) dropping the platters into another drive would work but unless you own a cleanroom best not do this yourself since a single spec of dust in the wrong place will produce further complications (wont really make the platters any worse but you'd have to clean them which is very hard to do)
oh and as for OP: Raid 1/5/6 are your friends - minimal setup, instant backup at all times and instant recovery when needed

Just throwing this out there too, you might want to set-up with Raid1. That's what I'm going to be doing here pretty shortly. It's not worth taking the risk of not consistently have your HDD backed up.
