Epic announce Datasmith, a multi-application importer for Unreal

This is pretty exciting for product 3D stuff. We have a whole database of over 600 products setup to work with Maya/Vray. There is a huge spot for interactive product configurators for simple stuff like color, decals, bold on add-ons things.

Really wanted to start using Unreal for this. Their EULA lets us as for just visualization purposes, BUT getting all the product processed for UE4 (new materials for all the product was thing big hurtle) stopped us as we don't have the bandwidth to support it now. Small team.

But... This sounds pretty damn useful for us. Signed up for the beta and wanted to share here in case anyone here didn't hear about it.

We've been using this beta since last week and it's been a huge timesaver.

Converted a whole 2 bedroom apartment pretty quickly. There are some quirks and lack of support still for some things but it gives you an error report on export so at least it is possible to find workarounds.

I'm on the beta but won't have time to look at it until next week. :(

You're making me excited nemac.

using it atm too, not finding much luck getting the corona look though, the lighting is still lack luster IMO - however Pierre did mention that they are working on this currently. It did take out a lot of import/export and material process though which is great. I think there will be good things to come. If you are a beta tester you can check out my results on the unreal forum. Hopefully Ill get some more time between projects to update it.
