| Floorplan from 2d to 3d |
deejay |
Hi! Im a newbie at 3d studio max. I've been through some tutorials, so I know a little bit about the program. Anyway, I was hoping for some tips in how to make 3d models from 2d floorplan(the best and fastest way) They do not need to be 100 % compared to the 2d models in measurement. A realestate agency want me to try make some models, and if they are happy with the result, I will have alot of work ahead of me:) Here is how I want the model to be:

I could type you a long description of the process, but I'm in a bit hurry atm. So open up max user reference and use "splines" and "extrude modifier" as your keywords.
That should get your started !

using the floorplans (i am assuming they are drawn, if not cad files) create the shape of the room using a spline (line tool). Once you have the inital shape, outline the spline to the thickness you want and then use the Extrude modifier to create the walls. For Building furniture, create a plane object with not segments in the top viewport and copy rotate that plane for a front view and then the side view. start with simple objects and work out the details as you finish.

Same as TimTamFin here, any description (and there is more than one) will be lengthy. The furniture can be purchased from many websites but it isnt worth investing in until you know youve got plenty work coming to cover the cost. My best advice, you need to strike while the iron is hot. You dont know how to do this quickly and to that standard. Sub the work to someone who can do this (there are many people here including myself who could do that easily fron either CAD files or drawings), get the initial job back quickly and 'wow' the customer - clinch the rest of the work. The client thinks you are great. Initially you make a small mark up, break even or loose a little. The bigger picture is you now have the time a make a bussiness deal with your sub contractor (to either teach you how to do it or to do them for you and you mark it up). Just dont loose the work because you take too long to get back or its just not standard.
Now the bidding begins, everyone will now start to offer to do this and the price will drop and drop. Some will be time wasters, some will be very capable, professional folk who can help. I would be happy to talk to your more by email if you wish, just let me know.

It sounds like you don't have a clue what you are doing in 3Dmax and perhaps you are trying to do something that you are not capable at this time. Maybe you should do some of the tutorials that come with max and learn how to perform some basic program functions. I am sure others on the forum don't want to hold your hand and walk you through every step of this project.

yeah, if you can't get by modeling a basic house with windows, doors, etc then your probably way in over your head and should send the companies name, address, and email to me so that i can do it properly...

Sorry guys. Did I struck a nerve? You cant be new to 3d studio in this forum? Sorry, I will not ask any more "newbie" questions then...
And for those who think my questions are silly can just ignore this post, right?

If you've been through some tutorials you should know how to make doors and windows, I know I've followed some tutorials on that subject exactly. But I dont have a link.
Edit, or you can go spend probably like $30 on some home design software. Don't even use max if this is all you want.

@deejay: This forum can be tough sometimes, but you'll get honest critique from these guys and if you're professional enough you learn from it. As for some of the comments, they may sound rough, but they are valid. 3D studio max isn't a hobbyist easy to use software.
So if you have gotten an idea that making things look good is easy with max. You've been mislead !
Anyhow, if you really want to learn. The tutorials that came along with max is the best starting point. Once you get the hang of the basics ( your question falls very much into that category ). You can visit CGarchitect.com and check out the tutorials in there. You have to understand that to follow and get something out of those tutorials you have to have basic working knowledge of 3dsmax and rendering setups.
Rgds, Timo

Thanks timtamfin... I will look into more tutorials. I know how to make window etc, but the purpose of this thread was to ask ppl at this forum of the most optimal(fastest and easiest) way of making that model in the first post. That includes all aspects of creating that model.
Torbotwo: ive been using imsi floorplan and skecthup. The thing is those models created in those program dont eve come close to the model in the first post.
Here is a model I made in sketchup just now:

As you can see it dont even come close to the 3d studio model

okay, ive used sketchup for about 15 minutes, but alot of the principles are essentially the same, You got the walls, the floor can be a plane or box, and most other stuff in your scene can me made by starting with basic boxes. What you need to look into is editable poly, so you can turn a box into a sink and what not.
Do what you can for now, ask more specific questions, if your lucky, grotey might show up and make the whole thing "just to show you how"
