| Gmail and non-Gmail accounts (sorry) |
Dave |
I'm at the end of my tether here, and I'm not sure what else to do... so I am calling upon Maxforums for a bit of generic understanding.
I use an @garydavedotcom email address, I also have an @gmail.com account. Previously, I have always had the garydave account linked into Gmail, so I could use gmail for both accounts. Gmail would simply fetch my garydave emails.
But that all stopped working after my server did a migration. My garydave address was still receiving/sending mail fine, but not from my Gmail account.
I spoke with my hosts support and their advice was for me to allow "Google Apps DNS Changes" in my admin area, which sounded simple enough. But that changed some MX Records over to google... which completely broke my garydave email. (if you try to send an email to me, it will bounce back)
Now... I'm thinking that the original advice I was given, was just wrong. Basically. But I don't have the technical know-how to really explain and/or fix my problem. If Gmail had always fetched emails from my server... why was I now relinquishing my own server space, and handing control over to google?
Apologies for the off-topic'ness.
Edit Words fixed.

Don't know if this will help but now's the perfect time to migrate away from gmail to yahoo or whatever. I got rid of my gmail a couple of days before they changed their privacy policy. Yes, I've got ghosterly (which stops all tracking information from being sent to third parties) but, on principle, any company that sells your private information to make money should be boycotted.
[edit] Just saw your "[edit] - Words fixed." Ignore my rant.

So,
Your official mail isn't working Or Your google account isn't working Or The linking between both the account isn't working
Am sorry, but I really didn't understand the issue

I think I've got a better understanding, sorry for the rambles. My official mail and gmail was working fine, just the linking had stopped. I emailed support (my host, not google) and they changed my MX Records, which then "broke" my official mail.
I've since concluded that I didn't need nor even want the MX Records changed, but I didn't know enough at the time to question them. So They changed them back after I asked them to... and then someone else changed it again without me asking, and then my entire site went down, and now I'm waiting 2 hours for it all to be fixed... hopefully.
This thread is pretty pointless actually... sorry, I was just trying to get a better understanding.

Daaave you may want to use 'google apps' it basically replaces your webmail with gmail.
so my normal email address, I access via google/gmail, and all the other google products that it currently supports docs/youtube/cal etc. etc.
All you have to do is change the mxs records or whatever it is to point at what tell you. (I don't know whats its called exactly but its simple) And then you retrieve/send mail as dave@dave.com as normal, no fwd-ing or linking etc.

I'd rather not, I've got friends who use my host for their email too. If it was just up to me I might be tempted to release unto the Google. But it's way more hassle than it's worth at the moment. I liked the linked accounts though, it was stupid easy and up until a week ago, flawless.
Edit Oh hey now my sig has stopped displaying. Cool.

Am glad that your setting & site is back.
I keep Gmail and my official mail away. All my subs, friends, family, forums etc and linked to my gmail address. Only my other gmail (hardly used) is for the official purpose. My @3darchvis.com is only for official purposes or something very important. The gmail was connected to pop3, but eventually I removed that as well. Somehow I like keeping all these email away from each other.
Reeves - I am wondering creating documents and other file with gmail, won't you loose the (c) to google.
