Googles stupid sketchup

Hey guys, Im currently working with a client whoses prefered tool is sketchup. I find it to be really useless (except for sketching) but they want to make photoreal renders with vray (which I use for 3dsmax).

The question I have is regarding open polygons, it seems like every object I encounter (made by them) has open polygons so light leaks while rendering. Is anybody here an expert on SU() Does a plugin exist that will close all open polygons or am I whishfuly thinking()

That sounds like a pain. I can't help specifically but i do know a lot of arch vis guys use it for quickly building up models, as although Sketchup is awkward and painful to use it's pretty rapid once people know how to use it properly and offers some advantages over poly modelling.. Perhaps the open polies issue is more related to their specific export settings or workflow - maybe worth looking into that?

couple of things you can do here.
First improrting the file with the menu. then you get the options for importing. it is asking were to put the image files and check of front back as double materials if I am correct.
Convert the objects to Poly objects. Then use merge vertexs.
set a suitable distance for this merge vertexs option.
(You can see the diffrents when pressing 7 on keyboard for statics before you press the merge button)
If some things still not clossed you zoom in on it and select the once you want to close then merge again or try collapse
For the light there are som options. You wnat to check the Force 2 sided option in the render menu (options)
Also be sure that all the faces are in the correct direction and when looking from behind it is visible. (back Face culling off in mental ray)

can u post a link to the file, i just read about this on cgarchitect - seems like this is a common issue. Which is odd because I use sketchup files in 3ds every week and never have a problem?

I would like to see if its just the modeller or the workflow

Hey guys sorry for disappearing after the post.

ScotlandDave, I am sure it must be a great tool for some people, specially if properly used but these guys seem to use it as a design tool and expect it to be professional rendering tool as well, so most of the time I am finding open edges and light leaks everywhere. Getting used to it now and I can tell if there is going to be a problem even before trying to render a test.

Scheidema, the thing is I am forced to use SU for this project, if it was Max I know a couple of workarounds just like you mention, thanks for the info though!

donavella, I will post a file soon, let me just finish the project first and I will let you know!
