Optimizing plants and trees for faster rendering
show user profile  Justin101
Hi all,

The title pretty much says it all. I got some amazing models of plants and trees but they take ages to render. I originally got rid of all the texture settings that increase render time like translucencey, reflections and bump maps which helped a bit, but with some, not at all.

I'm playing with the optimize modifier in 3ds max 2015, but it's inconsistent. Some plants render faster and some even take longer to render.

Can anyone advise how they optimize complex models to render quicker please.

It really depends man, on the render engine, settings, material settings, geometry..

If you could you post some screenshots for example of the plant geometry, scene, and some settings, people might be better equipped to help..

best thing you can do to speed up your plants is check the bitmap blur, make this 1.0
most of the time the bitmap blur is set to 0.1 for plants - which kills the scene at a distance, unless they are close its safe to switch back to default (1.0)

I haven't rendered plants and trees yet but I'd be really interested in what you're trying to do! You don't have a screenshot of those?
