Procedural Geometry Creation

I am trying to look into ways to create geometry in a procedural way.
I am looking at a few pieces of work, but am especially interested inhttp://www.mrkism.com/diatomea/
I do not really know where to start looking for tutorials as I do not know the proper term to search for.
How do you apply an algorithm to drive the creation of the surface? Is this creating a displacement map?

That is some amazing stuff. They seem to mainly use Houdini and C4D. Any thoughts on approaching this in Max? I've used displace modifier, but it seems to be rather limiting.

max is rather limiting :P

I should clarify; I use 3dsmax every day as my main tool... however your question being related to procedural geometry creation - use a procedural modeller;

1. Houdini (multi-threaded + opencl)
2. C4D + Xpresso (single threaded)
3. rhino + grosshopper (single threaded)

Anyone else with procedural software/workflows - feel welcome to contribute to this list
