V-Ray help needed distributed rendering
show user profile  Krogoth
Hi all,

We're trying out V-Ray 3.5 at work, and we're liking it, but when we try to render an image sequence on our render farm, the shadows seem to move a little. We're using Vray Sun, and it's like the sun is shifting slightly to the right on one of the computers. Both computers run Xeon E5-1650 processors, but one is a v2, the other is a v3, both at the same clock speed. We have not had any problems rendering Mental Ray sequences on these two machines, the renders always look the same. Does anyone know why it looks like the shadow has moved? Below are two images for comparison, frame 460 was done on one computer, while 461 was on the other. Nothing is moving in this sequence, a RealFlow mesh appears and starts animating. Look at the shadow in the lower left corner, you will see it shift if you cycle between the two frames.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks. Please don't make recommendations for an online render farm.

Did you try rendering both frames on the same computer?
Does the shadow still move?

I have, and the shadow does not move if it is rendered on only one computer.

It looks like the shadow inside the cylinder is still correct.
Do you have a displacement map on the ground plane?
This is a long shot but did you check include maps in the submit dialog Options?
I'm assuming you're using backburner.

Yes, we're using backburner, and no I did not have Include Maps checked. All of our textures are on the network so we've never needed to enable that, but enabling that seems to have fixed the issue. And... it looks like the normal map was not referencing the copy on the network, but a local copy, sigh. I know I checked all the map paths...

Does Vray have trouble with displacement maps? We were thinking about putting one on the ground plane.

Thanks for taking the time to look into this, Joey. I'm glad it was just an oversight on my part. We're really hoping to make a good case to switch from MR to VRay.

Vray does not have a problem with maps but there's multiple ways of getting a path to the maps.
ie:

\\renderslave_1\c$\epicpath
\\z:\epicpath
\\192.13214564\epicpath
Could be a problem you are experiencing. Make sure you can access the file on the same path on each pc. Also, could be that you have different rights on both users on both pc's so one pc cant access.
