restricting bones rotation?

just a quick hint pls, do i get bones completely wrong or am i not supposed to be able to simply restrict the ways a bone can be moved? i am animating a simple hand and just want the fingers to not move sideways EVER! as they dont in us real hue-maans, am i getting it wrong or just not finding the right menu point here!?

to clarify: i want to restrict the motion of the bone completely, even in the viewport controls, so i cannot even move it to that position in the viewport - again thinking i got something wrong here :(

Also I think you can lock axes on bones (Hierarchy tab, IK panel - uncheck the "active" box for the respective axis) as well as on most geometry and helpers (Hierarchy tab, Link Info panel)
