S. Silard's WIP Thread
show user profile  S. Silard
Hey, this will be the thread I'm going to post my works into. Hopefully there will be a lot by the end of the year.

So some of you may know that I'm into a lot of programming lately, thus I do not have much spare time to do 3D related stuff. So the works I'm going to post over here probably wont going to be part of any serious project. Just ,you know, Maxing and relaxing. Critique & Comments are always appreciated.

Random Mech

Last Friday I found a concept art, and I really liked it, so started up 3DS max immediately. Enough talk... time to show.

Please rig it, animate it and then justifiably consider yourself frickin' awesome.

Damnit i love the legs on this thing! Great job on all the little peripheral detail too.. Are you going to push it further?

As said, must see animation etc etc..

Thanks guys, so Maxforums isn't that rude place after all. (Rising my shield)

Otherwise, I do not know yet if I push it any further. Need to talk to concept artist if he is okay with it, and than see if I get the time for it.

Modelling looks awesome. Thoughts on lighting? based on what? what were you going for? harsh midday sun? very poor job. Soft clay render? looks spot on. Give us something to go by here :)

[edit] How would this thing walk without toppling over as soon as it lifted any leg? I guess it would have to sort for bob down then jump up a bit to get enough clearance for the foot to move :/

Grotey, three legged robots would rely on inertia and quick leg movements.

Really impressed with this model. You mentioned rigging, is it rigged at all?

I think actually I was the one who mentioned rigging, and perhaps Silard sensibly ignored me. :)

@mrgroteyThat one was meant to be Clay Render setup, later this will be good for turntable and such. Today started to set up the outdoor lighting. Truth be told, I'm bad with lighting, so it takes me a lot of time and tweaks. About the walking animation, working on it. It's still a pretty big question if it will turn out any good.

@mike_renouf Actually talked with Nik on Facebook, there I mentioned I Rig it as I'm modelling it. But not the whole thing can be rigged on the fly.

@Nik ClarkThe head, front leg, and most of the wires are rigged, the rear legs were horrible. Will need some physics if I think animation seriously. But I do not feel like it's my goal.

The UVW maps are on their way, a lot of part's missing it though, some are full of errors.
Actually that's an Orthographic projection, this is approximately the same camera angle as the one on the concept art.

That's one good looking mech, Silard. I hope your textures will do the model justice :)

MrG > How would this thing walk without toppling over as soon as it lifted any leg?

Kind of like your tripods from Mars, I suppose... ;p

I would imagine it'd need to rock back onto two legs while adjusting the third.

Not sure how it would keep it's "head/body" stable thought.

Maybe it'd be super agile and jumpy. Guess that'd make more sense with all it's leg joints.

Ie. Imagine it being pushed down by a giant thumb, and then springing / jumping where it needs to be.

Or, I'd remodel it's feet to be more monkey/hand-like. Be cool if it could climb / scale up cliffs/ walls.

Or navigate around bombed out shells of buildings / urban sprawls.

I'd like to see a funny little animation sketch where it's cables get unplugged and it trips over itself.

edit: go go Szilard go!

edit edit: Great work though, goes without saying ;)

Well, that one never got finished. Did not got the time, and later the spirit for it.

Reaper Centurion

Don't know about you, but I'm a relatively big Mass Effect fan, and yesterday it was the N7 day. So I watched they stream, and modeled this thing.

This thing is one of the Reaper Drones from Mass Effect... kind of, it never got to the final game.
Perhaps they decided that all Reaper forces should be organics turned into some, well, mess.
The concept art is made by Matt Rhodes, who is a Lead Concept Artist at Bioware as I know, and he worked on Mass Effect 1,2,3 as well.

The blogpost I've dug to find this:
And if you hate scrollnig, than you can check it out right there:(Click)

Now the model:

Yeah, I know, it would deserve a render.

Edit: Changed the image to a clay render, who want's the see the original that I have posted click here.

Well, that one did not got much exposure. Can't decide if it was that bad, or you all saw that it wont be improved any further.

Anyways, now's something that is planned to be continued.

on Sketchfab

That's a bunch of html code. Hope it embeds Sketchfab, as I decided to check that thing out. Thought an uploaded model can show so much more than a single image. Also helps me being confused if I'm doing hi-poly, or low-poly. As I saw that a hi-poly textured stuff is pretty heavy for my browser. It is based on that concept art by the way:

Looking forward for comments and critiques. In the mean time I should get my shield out of somewhere.
