show user profile  donvella
I was looking online to see how people set up their max ui and how effecient it makes you. I have put mine below the top one, and Im trying out this feature which I have never seen before circled in red at the top (second image). Whats yours?

I love the new enhanced menus. You can drag things to build your own menus with the things you want together.

I can't go back to the old menus any more.

I just can't get my head around the fact that the UI changes in EVERY release, but the added feature set would fit on the back of a postage stamp (verbose version).

i hear your rant mike, i keep thinking the same thing year after year. I try justify it in my head like - you could look at it like a mercedes, they made their best product years ago, now its just a headlight adjustment here, a taillight there, and once in a blue moon they might drop in a new engine component. Being a car enthusiast would shit you off year after year waiting for that component, but at least its a decent vehicle none the less - with cool body kits (3rd party plugins).

To be fair, when Max 2010 came out they said they would be gradually changing the interface over time. I really like the current interface, and it gets even better with max 2015.

But, I agree, the slow development is highly frustrating.

Mr Minimal...legacy undo buttons, strip out all the clutter, everything fired off using activetype, it's a bit sparse on buttons because it's a fresh install, this is "modelling mode".

i like how you have stayed true to your roots FX lol

they have activetype now builtin max2014, its now X which I think is pretty damn cool. Your layer manager will be in 2015 so soon you can remove your old plugins :)... if you dare. Considering you dont put any tools on the right side of your toolbars 'remove deadspace' might be of use to you...

Yeah. Slap that thing on the second screen on 3 widths and off we go.

Thanks for the deadspace tip donvella, you make me feel like a Luddite ;) I do put tools to the right side, just haven't got round to it yet, this is a fresh install.
The X button is basically a bad reincarnation of activetype, it's slow cumbersome and no-where near as configurable as activetype is, I use soulburnscripts and can access all the commands via activetype with the custom .ini feature.

I'm assuming the "new" layer manager is a reincarnation of Outliner, no doubt executed badly/buggy and in an unfinished state, I'm waiting on v3.0 which is under development..

www.wtv3d.org/t15793-outliner-30-3ds-max-script

Quote from the Author...

"I’ve been talking to Autodesk about helping them out with scene management improvements. For over a year we’ve been discussing ideas and my work on the new Outliner version. But after much indecision from their side, they finally declined my offer."

No surprise there ;)

I strip out all the top quick access/infocenter with..

fn closeQAT_ICS =
(
controlshwnds = windows.getChildrenHWND #max
QAT = (for c in controlshwnds where c[5]=="QATHwndSource" collect c[1])[1]
ICS = (for c in controlshwnds where c[5]=="InfoCenterHwndSource" collect c[1])[1]
UIAccessor.CloseDialog QAT
UIAccessor.CloseDialog ICS
)
closeQAT_ICS()

To me that's wasted space, but afaik, there's no easy way to edit the quick access area.

I use ...

macroScript ToggleRibbon
category:" VigTools"
toolTip:"Toggle Ribbon/AnimBar"
icon:#("ribbon",1)
(-- Toggles on and off the bottom toolbar
fn togglebotoff = (
trackbar.visible = false
timeSlider.setVisible (false)
statusPanel.visible = false
MaxRibbon.SetRibbonDockState #bottomDock
MaxRibbon.ShowRibbon true
)

fn toggleboton = (
trackbar.visible = true
timeSlider.setVisible (true)
statusPanel.visible = true
MaxRibbon.ShowRibbon false
)

if trackbar.visible == false then (
toggleboton()
)
else (
togglebotoff()
)
)

And bind it to "[" to toggle the track bar area and replace it with the ribbon

Leagacy Undo buttons are via spacefrog's toolbar hack...

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=1096221

I still prefer to right click on the buttons and get my undo list.

Outliner is bound to "O" , toggle toolbar to "[" and toggle Command panel to "]"

3 buttons and I have full control over the UI :)

I don't want all the unfinished fluff AD are using, I'd like to be able to customise the dropdown flyouts from the main toolbar, but afaik, it's not possible.

Sometime I use Dark UI, it depends how bad the hangover is ;)

The most important macroscript you can have:

macroscript restart
(
quitMax #noPrompt
)

never get low & slow & out of ideas

I used to love customising my UI, but over the past 2 years or so the only thing I give a shit about any more is my quad menu items, everything else can stay default.

Well, I mean except for things like the viewcube, and the viewport gradient, and the giant old-people-friendly icons. That shit can fuck right off.
